SALLIE LEE (BALLANCE) EMSHOFF

1938-2022

Sallie Lee (Ballance) Emshoff of Avoca, Nebraska, was born on February 11, 1938 in Anna, Illinois to Al and Freda Ballance. She passed away on February 22, 2022 at Banner Del Webb Medical Center in Sun City West, Ariz.

She and her family moved from Baker, Kansas to Nebraska in May of 1938. She attended Eagle High School where she was an athletic standout lettering in volleyball four years and receiving all conference recognition each year. She also received all-state honors. Sallie was a cheerleader and was president of the pep club. She was also homecoming queen. She was the parliamentarian for the schools FHA chapter and was treasurer of her freshman class and vice-president of her senior class. She was the girl’s sports editor of the Eagle Echo. She was also very musical in high school, where she sang in the triple trio, and the girls glee.

She attended the Lincoln School of Commerce to learn short-hand so she could begin her first job at Nebraska National Life Insurance Company. She also had jobs at Montgomery Wards in Lincoln and Country Mart in Nebraska City.

She met Stan Emshoff at a dance at the Cass County Fair. They were married on March 6, 1959 at the United Methodist Church in Eagle.

She was a terrific cook and this was known not only by her family but also many in the community. Her specialties were pan fried chicken, sugar cookies, homemade runzas, corned beef, rolls and any kind of pie. She enjoyed bowling in Lincoln and Syracuse and qualified to bowled in the state bowling tournament. She enjoyed family gatherings, gardening, spending winters in Arizona and especially her grandchildren and attending all their many events. She made each of her grandkids a scrap book with family articles from old newspapers, elementary school notes, personal notes and keepsakes. The scrapbooks were given to each grandchild upon their high school graduation to be cherished forever.

Sallie is survived by Stan, her husband of 62 years, daughter, Kellie (Ben) Pope, Avoca; son Dan (Rachelle) Emshoff, Auburn, Neb., son Alan (Amy) Emshoff, Exeter, Neb.; Grandchildren Alyssa Emshoff (Auburn), Ethan (Megan Spain) Emshoff, Lincoln, Austin Emshoff, Chandler, Ariz., Callie (Reason) Emshoff, Lincoln, and Hudson Emshoff, Auburn, Taylor (Kory) Kahlandt, Exeter, Maddy (Ben) Underwood, Lincoln, Meredith (Grant Waldemer) Emshoff, Milwaukee, Wis., Keegan (Kahner Woods) Pope, Avoca, Kyler (Pope) Brown, Bellevue; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Karen and Frosty Smith, Fort Garland Colo. Sallie is also survived by great-grandchildren, Kolsen, Kolbie and Tate Kahlandt, GiGi and Goldie Underwood, River Emshoff-Waldemer, Cora and Palmer Brown, Trevor McNeely, Marlie, Ihrey and Hialee Armstrong, Paxtyn Pope and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sallie will be missed by Nevee her four-legged friend.

She was preceded in death by her parents Al and Freda Balance, father-and-mother-in-law Ernest and Helen Emshoff. Sisters Baby Balance, sister and brother-in-law and Billie and Walter Rueter. Brothers and sister-in-law Norma and Darrell Mather, and Carroll Emshoff.

Funeral Services will be held at the Eagle United Methodist Church in Eagle, NE on Friday, March 4, 2022 at 10:30 with burial at the Avoca Cemetery in Avoca. Visitation will be at Hammons Family Funeral Chapel in Weeping Water on Thursday, March 3, 2022 from 1:00-8:00 p.m. with family present from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.

Memorials are suggested to go to St. Jude’s or Children’s Hospital in Omaha.
