LANETTE ELAINE (ADAMS) NIES YOUNG

1941-2019

Lanette Elaine Adams, daughter of Ross and Maryon (Thomas) Adams, was born June 8, 1941 at Peru, Nebraska. She attended school in Peru, graduating from Peru Prep. Lanette went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in English and Theater from Hastings College and later a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of South Dakota.

Lanette was a high school English teacher in Crete and Hastings. She began her career in higher education administration as the Dean of Students at Yankton College in South Dakota and retired from Indiana University East in Richmond, Indiana in 2007.

On May 20, 2000 Lanette was united in marriage to Dr. Benjamin F. Young in Lynn, Indiana.

Lanette was a 50+ year member of the Brownville Chapter #263 Order of Eastern Star. She loved riding horses and reading. She was a collector of Western and Native American art.

Lanette passed away Monday, December 16, 2019 in Richmond at the age of 78 years, 6 months, and 8 days. Her parents Ross and Maryon and sister Patricia Tushla preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband Ben of Winchester, Indiana; daughter Dr. Kristi Nies of Peru, Nebr.; step-daughter Crystal Young of St. Louis, Missouri; uncle and aunt Garth and Gloria Adams of Peru, and Beverly Hills, Florida; other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the Peru Community Church, officiated by Pastors Ray and Becky Girard. David Norris was organist and pianist. Casket bearers were Jim Winkelman, Luke Winkelman, Buster Barnard, Bud Kieler, and Garth Adams. Burial was in Mt. Vernon Cemetery at Peru.

Services were entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn.
