He was raised on a farm southwest of Humboldt and attended school in Humboldt. John was proud of his heritage. He was the fifth generation of a Swiss family that came to Humboldt in 1856. Now there are seven generations who have lived in Nebraska and he was named after his great-grandfather, John Rist.

From 2007 to 2010 John worked at True-Value Hardware as a weekend manager and assistant manager during the week until retiring in 2010.
In 1981, John was united in marriage to Loretta E. Buss. The couple raised three children Tammy, Nicole and Marcus who all graduated from Humboldt High School.
