GLENIS MARIA HOPP
1928 - 2023
Glenis Maria (Holtgrewe) Hopp, age 94 of Talmage died March 7, 2023 at The Ambassador in Nebraska City. Glenis was born March 16, 1928 on the family farm near Lorton, the daughter of Herman John and Hedwig (Hattie) Augusta Fischer Holtgrewe.
She was baptized on April 6, 1928, in the home of her parents by Rev. H. Baumgaertel, Pastor of St. John’s Evangelical Church, Talmage, NE. Glenis was confirmed on March 29, 1942, at St. John’s Evangelical Church by Rev. Max Strasburg. Her confirmation memory verse was: know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? I Corinthians 3:16. She completed grades 1 through 10, at District #39, Lorton Public School. Her Junior and Senior year was completed in 1945 at the Talmage High School, Talmage, NE.
After working about a year at Banks Grocery, Talmage, Nebraska, Glenis attended a twelve-week summer course at Peru State Teachers College, Peru, NE, where she received a three-year teaching certificate. She taught for two years at District #37, Mohawk School.
Her marriage to Donald Harry Hopp was on June 16, 1948, at St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church (McWilliams), Talmage, NE. Two sons, Gerald Wayne and Mark Virgil were born to this union. Donald and Glenis lived on a farm east of Talmage for 66 years where Glenis was a homemaker and assisted her husband in farming. Music was one of her hobbies and she was a church organist for as long as she remembered for St. John’s Evangelical and Reformed Church, and continued after her marriage, when she became a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church/Zion UCC, Talmage, Nebraska. She sang in the church choir and was a children’s choir director and Sunday School teacher. Glenis also had many piano students, was an accompanist at Nemaha Valley High School, as well as Talmage Community Thanksgiving services and Memorial Day observances.
Glenis held various offices in the Zion Women’s Fellowship after joining in the 1960s. She was a former member of the New Idea Extension Club, served on the Nebraska Farm Bureau Federation Women’s Committee as well as the Nebraska Farm Bureau State Board of Directors. Gardening, canning, traveling and genealogy were among her interests. She was a volunteer at the Ambassador, Nebraska City, playing piano for the residents and at Good Samaritan Center, Syracuse, Nebraska, as an accompanist for their hymn sing.
Survivors include: one son, Gerald (Kathy) Hopp of Lincoln, daughter-in-law, Julie Hopp, (widow of Mark) of Dunbar, four grandsons, Andrew (Stephanie), Gretna, Brian (Jamie) Hopp of Lincoln, Christopher Hopp of Omaha, David (Ally) Hopp of Omaha. Eight great-grandchildren: Ethan, Ashleigh, Kaitlyn of Gretna, Alaina, Lincoln, and Atalie of Lincoln, and Moira and Nolan of Omaha. Brother Virgil Holtgrewe of Estes Park, Colorado; nieces Claire Holtgrewe of Arvada, Colorado, and Janet (Terry) Ostrom of Steamboat Springs, CO and two great-nephews, Tyler and Lance Ostrom, as well as other relatives and friends. Glenis was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, her son, Mark, and her sister-inlaw, Carol Holtgrewe.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Zion United Church of Christ in Talmage with burial in St. John’s Cemetery.
Visitations with family will be 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday at Marshall Funeral Chapel in Nebraska City.
