DORIS MAY COATNEY

1934-2021

Doris May (Caspers) Coatney passed away peacefully on March 20, 2021 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Denton, Texas. She was buried next to her husband Keith in Las Vegas.

Doris was born on August 31, 1934 in Auburn, Neb. She was the second of five children born to Albert and Blanche (Gerdes) Caspers. She was raised on the family farm. She attended Muddy School, District 41 and graduated from Auburn High School. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s (Stone) Lutheran Church, southwest of Auburn, Neb.

She met Keith Coatney at a high school basketball game and they were married in 1952. They made their home in Las Vegas, where Keith was stationed in the Air Force. Doris landed a position at Central Telephone Company. She retired after over 40 years with perfect attendance. Doris and Keith were married 59 years until death parted them in March 2011.

Weekends were spent either camping, fishing, hunting, or hosting barbecues. Living in Las Vegas, it became a vacation destination for many extended family members. Fishing trips and fish fries were famous and renowned among them. Doris, Keith, and their children, Jim and Janice, had a lot of fun together on summer vacations as they traveled across the United States and into Canada. After retirement, Keith and Doris bought a new motor home to continue their adventures.

Doris served as treasurer of her retiree group and co ordinated its regular lunch gatherings for years.

Doris was a founding and faithful member of Christ Lutheran Church where she quilted for many years.

Doris was known for her big smile, friendliness, and sense of humor. She was kind to all she encountered. She was unusually thoughtful and considerate of her friends and loved ones and prayed daily for them. Doris will be very much missed by all who loved her and by all who were blessed enough to have her in their lives.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents and husband. She is survived by her children, James Ryan (Gladys) Coatney and Janice Marie Clark. Grandchildren Tarah Marie McGroskey and Julie Catherine Clark, and greatgranddaughter Avery Marie McGroskey. Siblings Raymond Caspers Sr, Auburn, Neb.; Betty (Dwight) Hahn, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Carole (Dennis) Bartels, Anderson, Calif. and Barbara Grace, Elgin, Texas. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Services were held on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at Bunkers Eden Vale Mortuary in Las Vegas.
