DORIS LARAE BOURN

1926-2021

Doris LaRae Bourn, 95, of Auburn passed away Friday, December 10, 2021 at Good Samaritan Society-Auburn. She was born on December 6, 1926, in Minden, Nebraska to Oscar William and Clare (Tombrink) Olson a couple of minutes after her twin sister Phyllis. Doris received her primary education from Progress School District West #12 near Overton and graduated from Overton High School in 1944. She explored higher education briefly before choosing marriage and a family.

Doris married Calvin Edmisten July 10, 1946 at her parents’ home. They lived near Lexington, Nebraska raising livestock and farming. They had two children, Cherri Clare and Douglas Lynn.

After her husband died October 1, 1949, Doris and children moved into Lexington where she found employment doing secretarial work at the local grain elevator. Doris married Keith Bourn May 4, 1953. He was employed at the First National Bank in Lexington. They had five additional children and moved several times while Keith pursued his banking career. Doris called many places home during her marriage to Keith, also including Walden, Colo.; Tilden, Neb.; Cody, Glenrock and Lander, all in Wyoming and Lincoln before living the past 41 years in Auburn.

She became very skillful at making the most of what was available and what could be afforded. Doris was a master gardener and canned everything the garden produced. She was a gifted tailor, crafted not only her children’s clothes and coats but whatever was needed. Doris was a wonderful cook and baker. She volunteered her time when her children were young, including Brownies, Girl Scouts, Jobs Daughters, 4-H, Demolay, The Methodist Church, Newcomers and Cow Bells. Doris was a longtime member and past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star having had membership in both Lander, Wyoming and Brownville, Nebraska.

She was an avid bridge player, golfed while she could, did the jumble in the Omaha World-Herald, loved to travel, going as far as Saudi Arabia and enjoyed her church.

Doris is survived by her six children: Doug (Diane) Bourn of Richland, N.C.; Keith (Susan) Bourn Jr., Steamboat Springs, Colo.; Michelle Johnson of The Woodlands, Texas; Rene Bourn (Larry Joens) of Eagle Butte, S.D.; John (LaRonda) Bourn of New Ulm, Minn. and Andrea (Ron) Phillips of Nebo, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; 9½ great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews and brother-in-law, Larry Bourn of Boulder, Colo.
