Robert Lee Andrew was born July 8, 1933 in Auburn, Nebraska. He was one of three children of Everett and Gladys (Douglas) Andrew. Bob grew up and attended school in Auburn where he lived his entire life other than time in the military.
Bob joined the U. S. Navy May 9, 1951. Since he was only 17 he had to have a letter of permission from his parents. Serving during the Korean War, Bob’s duty assignment was the USS Montana. He received his honorable discharge on May 8, 1954 and returned to Auburn.
Bob was employed with several organizations throughout southeast Nebraska. In Auburn he had worked at Auburn Consolidated Industries and WoodCary Cabinets. He then worked at Woodings-Verona in Falls City. Bob then served as groundskeeper, mowing and performing other maintenance, at both Peru State College and Indian Cave State Park.
He belonged to the VFW and American Legion Posts in Auburn. Bob enjoyed hunting and fishing and riding his motorcycle. Building and flying model airplanes was another fun interest of his.
In February of 2020, Bob was no longer able to stay at his home in Auburn, and so he moved to the Good Samaritan Society in Auburn. It is there that he passed away on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, having reached the age of 87 years, 6 months, and 25 days. Along with his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his sister Bonnie Williamson.
Those left to mourn his passing include his sister Connie Walters of Nebraska City; nephews Allan Walters of Lincoln, Randy (Sue) Walters and children Jacob and Amanda of Clarinda, Iowa, John (Sonya) Williamson and sons Cody and Kyle of Wilber, Bob Williamson of Tecumseh; niece Kelli (Rolland) Lewis and daughter Stephanie of Omaha; “son” Cory Thompson and girlfriend Lauran and children Alex and Gemma of Auburn; other relatives and friends.
A graveside funeral and committal service was held Friday, February 5, 2021 at Sheridan Cemetery. Rev. John Henderson officiated and honorary bearers were Billy Hutton, Gene Taylor, Larry Dettmann, and Jeff Dettmann.
Services were entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home.
