BETTY JEAN HAWLEY BOHLING

1924-2020

Her story began in Brock, Nebraska. Betty Jean Hawley was born to Charles and Inez (Lockwood) Hawley on April 30, 1924. She graduated from Brock High School in 1941 and then worked for the telephone company.

Betty met Virgil Bohling in 4-H in 1942, and they were married January 31, 1943 at Hickory Grove Lutheran Church near Auburn, Nebraska. Two daughters were born to this union, Virginia Jean and Catherine Ann. The couple made their first home in Howe, Nebraska. After two years they moved to the family farm where they lived for 50 years. After retirement, Betty and Virgil moved to Auburn in 1992.

She worked at Hested’s, Johnson Motor Company, and the Auburn Chamber of Commerce where she was the Manager for 10 years prior to retiring in 1982.

Betty was raised in the Methodist Church in Brock. After her marriage she joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn. Activities she enjoyed with Virgil included golf, bowling, water skiing, snow mobile riding, dancing, visiting family and friends, playing cards and traveling.

Betty and Virgil had been married 64 years when he passed away on August 25th, 2007. She lived in their home for many years before moving to Long’s Creek Assisted Living in Auburn. Betty then moved to Morton Place in Nebraska City, Nebraska where she was known as “Bingo Betty”. It was at Morton Place Betty passed away on Thursday, December 24, 2020 at the age of 96 years, 7 months, and 24 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, brothers Dwight and Leland Hawley, brothers-in-law Loren Clark and Walt Bohling, and sisters-in-law Alberta Meier, Hazel Dunekacke, and Dean Hawley.

Betty is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law Ginny and Lon Allen of Omaha, Cathy and Louis Weyand of Austin, TX; grandchildren and spouses Todd Allen, Tim (Amy) Allen, Tiffany Baranauskas, Mike (Donna) Harris; great-grandchildren Lindsey Baranauskas, Alila and Zoie Allen, Alyssa and Landon Harris; sister Connie Clark of Omaha; sister-in-law Catherine Hawley of Brock; other relatives and friends.

A graveside funeral and committal service, officiated by Rev. Ken Miller, was Monday, December 28, 2020 at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery near Auburn. Casket bearers were Todd Allen, John Hawley, Chuck Hawley, Jay Bohling, and Bill Bohling.

Services were entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn.
