BOB “DUFFY” McADAMS

1937-2018

Robert Dale McAdams, one of three sons of Horace and Louise (Rhoades) McAdams, was born August 16, 1937 in Peru, Nebraska. Bob attended Indian Hills School and graduated from Peru Prep. On March 14, 1959 Bob was united in marriage to Ruby Beth Patterson in the Peru Christian Church. They would be blessed with two daughters, Shelley and Kelly. They made their home in Peru and were active in the community. As a young man, Bob had worked at his father’s service station and delivered ice in Peru. He worked on the Missouri River for a time after high school. Bob then opened his own service station in town and ran that until starting up Duffy’s Inn in downtown Peru. After a few years, Duffy’s gave way to Ruboshke’s, run with the help of the whole family. When Ruboshke’s closed, Bob began working at Peru Pallette and then Tradewell Pallette in Gretna. Through the years, he also drove a school bus and delivered mail in the area. Bob was a member of the Peru Volunteer Fire Department and served on the Peru City Council. He loved to bowl and sponsored and played on many bowling teams. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, as well as playing and coaching softball. He was a big Husker football and Peru State College sports fan. Ruby passed away on January 5, 1997 but Bob continued to live and work in Peru. On July 6, 2004 he and Sally Povondra were married in Anchorage, Alaska. They made their home in Peru after the wedding. When Bob’s health started to decline he became an avid bird watcher from his front porch. Even as his health failed further, Bob was able to stay at his home in Peru with the help of Sally, other family, and professionals. He passed away at home on Friday, June 15, 2018 at the age of 80 years, 9 months, and 30 days. In addition to Ruby, he was preceded in death by his parents Horace and Louise, step-mother Bula, and brothers Leland and Bill. Bob is survived by his wife Sally of Peru; daughters and sons-in-law Shelley and David Cygan of Lincoln; Kelly and Dave Adams of Peru; granddaughters Karlye Cygan of Lincoln; Sarabeth McAdams of Arcadia and fiancé Dustin Scott; great-grandson Tanner McAdams; sisters-in-law Marlene Foltz Kellar of Russellville, Arkansas; Patsy (Charlie) Fike of Auburn; Laurie (Steven) Hobbs of Omaha; brothers-in-law Jerry Patterson of Peru; John Patterson of Peru; other relatives and many friends. A funeral service will be Thursday, June 21, 2:00 p.m. at Hemmingsen Funeral Home in Auburn. Visitation will be Wednesday 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 6:00 to 8:00. Bob’s body will be cremated following the service, and burial of ashes will be at a later date at Mt. Vernon Cemetery at Peru. Memorials are suggested to Peru State College Baseball and Softball or Mt. Vernon Cemetery Association. Services are entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn.
