West Entrance to Nemaha County Courthouse Was Unlocked June 15

Effective Monday morning, June 15, the Nemaha County Courthouse reopened to the public on a non-appointment basis.

Access will be at the west door and is handicapped accessible. Wednesday, June 10 the Nemaha County Commissioners discussed the issue with Cailyn Winkelman, custodian and groundskeeper and County Treasurer Jana Gerdes. The doors to the facility had been locked nearly three months since Friday, March 20 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We need to do what we can to make (county) offices accessible to all. If there are any issues, we will make sure to work them out. I am more than willing to keep things moving,” notes Larry Holtzman, District 3 commissioner.

“If we use common sense with disinfecting, we have an obligation to reopen,” states Mike Hall, District 1 commissioner.

He continued if the courthouse had been inaccessible to the public by June 15 the county would not be able to participate in provisions of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
