Rotary Island Marks 60 Years in Existence

In early August of 1959, Auburn Rotarians dedicated their outstanding community service project and presented Rotary Island to the City of Auburn. The presentation took place during a special program at a Thursday evening Rotary Club meeting.

Rotary Island was an attractive addition to the city’s lake at the Nemaha County Fairgrounds comprised of six fireplaces, six picnic tables, a water supply, landscaping and other improvements. The entire layout was constructed in the form of the Rotary emblem.

Gene Ely had arranged the dedication program, which included remarks by H. A. Andrews of Andrews Monument Works, who gave the project marker; J. R. Childers, project chairman; Warren George, project designer; and George Eggleston, Rotary President, who presented the improvement to then Auburn Mayor Floyd Pohlman.
