Redistricting Services from 2020 U.S. Census Approved by Nemaha County Commissioners March 31

A $4,550 standard tier redistricting proposal from gWorks was accepted by the Nemaha County Commissioners Wednesday, March 31.

The company provides redistricting services based on updated 2020 U.S. Census data. gWorks will examine numbers to assure the county is being redistricted equally by population. Diane Johnson, county clerk, notes some results from the 2020 population count have not been turned in as early as normal with the ongoing COVID-19. The commissioners’ districts were last redrawn in 2011. Redistricting will not take affect until the 2024 election cycle.

Chair Bryan Mellage asked if state officials give recommendations on redistricting. Johnson replied most counties use a standard tier. She continues an advanced tier is available at an additional charge, giving one-on-one access to the gWorks team. You have to sign up to get on the redistricting list, the clerk states. gWorks has done work with the county assessor’s office.

The commissioners confirmed supporting Blue Rivers Area Agency on Aging by budgeting $11,369 in 2021-2022. The amount is unchanged from the last few years. The allo cation largely covers public transportation, the two vans stationed in the county have a lot of use. Nemaha County is among five counties providing transportation services and seven furnishing nutrition services. Mellage notes many municipalities are no longer financially supporting Blue Rivers believing it is double taxation with county funding. Besides Nemaha County, the agency serves those living in Gage, Jefferson, Johnson, Otoe, Pawnee, Richardson and Thayer counties.
