Nebraska Cattle, Calves Increase Slightly from 2020

All cattle and calves in Nebraska as of Friday, Jan. 1 totaled 6.85 million head.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service reports it represents a 1 percent increase from Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020.

All of the following are listed by head totals, and increases or decreases from the first day of 2020.

Cows and heifers which had calved: 1.96 million, a 1 percent decline.

Beef cows: 1.9 million, 1 percent fewer.

Milk cows: 60,000, up 3 percent.

Heifers 500 pounds and up: 1.96 million, a 3 percent increase.

Steers weighing 500 pounds and up: 2.47 million, up 4 percent.

Bulls weighing 500 pounds and up: 110,000, down 8 percent.

Calves under 500 pounds: 350,000, 5 percent fewer.

All cattle on feed fed for slaughter in Nebraska feed-lots: 2.72 million, 5 percent more.

The 2020 calf crop: 1.75 million, down 2 percent from 2019.
