County Commissioners Will Act Feb. 20 Regarding Participating in SE Nebraska Adult Drug Court

Wednesday, Feb. 20 the Nemaha County Commissioners will consider being part of Southeast Nebraska Drug Court pending expansion which requires Legislative approval. If the Unicameral accepts it, earliest the drug court would start is during fiscal 2019-2020.

Amanda Vanasperen met with the commissioners Wednesday, Feb.

6. She said then county boards in Johnson, Otoe, Pawnee and Richardson counties have agreed to become involved.

Sheriff Brent Lottman calls drug court an improved option over probation. If individuals completing the process would not reoffend, that would be great, the sheriff stated. It will not turn around the life of everyone who participates, Lottman noted.

Vanasperen informed the county officials the cost of a regional drug court would be in the $26,400 range which primarily covers the costs of prosecuting and defense attorneys. None of the counties has anyone in a full-time capacity in those positions.
