Johnson-Brock Volleyball Team Advances to C2 State Tournament

Senior Chelsea Johnson spiked with authority last Friday against Louisville. Wininger led the Lady Eagles by executing 17 of 17 attacks and 8 kills.

The Johnson-Brock Lady Eagles qualified for the 2008 Class C1 State Volleyball Tournament as they won three straight and took last Friday’s match over Louisville.
The Lady Eagles jumped out strong against the Lions and went on to win by eight points in the first set. Despite Louisville Coach Crystal Dwerlkotte’s two time-outs later in the first set, Johnson-Brock went on to win 25-17.
Coach Cory Starner’s team got off to a slow start in the second set and found themselves trailing early on. A couple of key blocks and aces helped the Eagles mount a comeback, with Brooke Wininger serving the game-winning point, including two aces in the closing stretch.
Kendall Comstock began serving in the third set and J-B reeled off six straight points before Louisville called a timeout to try to stop the momentum.
The Eagles then followed with strong spiking by nearly the entire squad and they went on to win 25-11.
Louisville ended its year with a 20-10 record, while Johnson-Brock improved to 26-6 with the win.
The #6 seed Eagles next play #3 seed Lutheran High Northeast at Lincoln East High School this Thursday, Nov. 13, in first round of the state tournament. The opening round foe is from Norfolk and brings a 28-5 record into the match.
Other Class C2 State Tournament qualifiers are, in order of bracket: #1 seed Ravenna (25-7) vs. #8 seed Thayer-Central (19-11); #5 seed Superior (25-6) vs. #4 seed Sutton (23-8) and #7 seed Cambridge (18-11) vs. #2 David City Aquinas Catholic (25-7).
If the Lady Eagles win Thursday, they would advances to a 9 p.m. Friday match against the winner of Cambridge and Aquinas.
New this year is the playing of third place matches and in this class it will be Saturday, Nov. 15 at noon at Lin
coln Southeast High School.
The championship match will be held 9 p.m. Saturday at the University of Nebraska Coliseum.
