JAMES A. RAMSEY

1932-2017
James Alfred Ramsey was born July 29, 1932, in Dawson, Nebraska. He was one of five children of Wyatt and Alice (O’Grady) Ramsey. Jim received his formal education in Dawson, where he graduated from high school, and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. James entered the United States Navy on August 4, 1952, and served in Guam during part of his service. After his honorable discharge on March 19, 1954, he returned to Dawson to farm. He married Mercedes Engles in 1953 in Auburn, Nebraska, and they were blessed with three children: Ann, Albert, and Dollie. Mercedes passed away in 1975. In addition to farming with his son Bert, Jim also worked for many years for the Nebraska Agriculture Statistics Service, surveying and compiling statistics. In 1981, Jim was united in marriage to Karen (Gibson) Martin in Dawson. Karen’s children, Denise, John, Laura, and Lance, joined Jim, Karen, and Jim’s children as a family. Jim was a member of the Humboldt American Legion Post, and served on the Dawson Volunteer Fire Department. He also was Mayor of Dawson for a time. After moving back and forth between Nemaha County Hospital and a Lincoln hospital for about a month, Jim entered the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn on December 30, 2016. He passed away there on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at the age of 84 years, five months, and three days. In addition to his wife Mercedes and his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother Charles. Jim is survived by his wife Karen of Dawson; children Ann Ramsey of Tecumseh; Bert Ramsey of Auburn; Dollie and husband Terry Dettmann of Arnold, Missouri; step-children Denise and husband John Arington of Beatrice; John and wife Mary Sue Martin of Falls City; Laura Pagnano of Verdon; Lance Martin and special friend Michelle of Dawson; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister Mary and husband Ralph Reschke of Lawrence, Kansas; brothers Wyatt Ramsey of Bellevue; John and wife Karen Ramsey of Dawson; sister-in-law Barb Ramsey of Dawson; other relatives and friends. A memorial mass was celebrated Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dawson, officiated by Fr. Kenneth Hoesing. Special music was played by Colton Martin. Urn bearers were Ann Ramsey, Albert Ramsey, Dollie Dettmann, Denise Arington, John Martin, Laura Pagnano, and Lance Martin. Burial of ashes was in Holy Cross Cemetery near Auburn, with graveside military honors. Services were entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn.
