Two Tough Losses End Season for First National Auburn Seniors Team
The First National Auburn Seniors went 0-2 in last week’s Class B Area 1 Baseball Tournament at Syracuse. The locals managed only one run in two games in spite of solid pitching by Auburn’s staff.
Nebraska City beat First National 4-1 on July 22 and Hickman came out on top 1-0 the next afternoon.
Game with Nebraska City
Grant Cole pitched for Auburn against the Otoe Countians and struggled during the second inning, during which time Nebraska City scored all of its runs. Cole hit three batters and allowed three singles during the inning. A strikeout by Cole ended the scoring and he went on to strike out 13 batters before the game was over.
Auburn’s lone score came in the sixth inning as Matt Oliver walked, stole second, reached third base on Cole’s single and came home on a wild pitch. That one-bagger by Cole was the lone hit given up by Nebraska City pitcher John Russell, who struck out nine.
Oliver stole two bases, while Blake Bans and Grant Leslie were each hit by a pitch. Oliver and Tyler Collin both drew two bases on balls.

Hickman 1, Auburn 0
Cody Baack started on the mound for Auburn against Hickman on Friday afternoon in a Consolation Bracket game. After shutting down the foes in order during the first inning, Hickman’s hitters got to Baack for three consecutive singles to start the second plus an error to score the game’s only run. Baack took the pitching loss and was relived by Cole in the fifth inning. Baack struck out three and Cole fanned four in a relief role.
Meanwhile, Hickman pitcher Price limited Auburn to only one single by Austin Emshoff. Price struck out 14 and gave up only three bases on balls. Emshoff stole second after his hit in the first inning, but was left on base after the next two Auburn player’s fanned. During the contest, Cole drew two walks, while Collin had one.
