The Brownville Concert Series kicks off its 23rd season in a collaboration with Peru State College with award-winning jazz vocalist Kathy Kosins.
She will perform in cabaret Friday and Saturday, March 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m. and in concert Sunday, March 17 at 2 p.m.

Kosins will be accompanied by Joe Cartwright, Kansas City’s top jazz pianist and Brownville favorite.

Last year, Kosins performed in Omaha as part of the “Jazz on the Green” series.
Kosins has won the hearts of critics and fans around the globe with her eclectic musical palette that expands the rich history of jazz.  “Solid intonation, unwavering swing and a voice that can conjure up both the girl next door and the wiser older sister.” Chicago Reader.  
Born and bred during the Motown era of Detroit, she began singing and arranging background vocals for producer Don Was in the early 1980s, which led to her becoming one of the most sought after session singers. As a lead vocalist she recorded for both Carrere (Sony) and Quality Records and later toured with Was/Not Was.
In the early 1990s, Kosins, a ferocious writer and arranger, fell in love with the freedom of the jazz art form and her writing naturally evolved into a more traditional approach. Stints with the JC Heard and Nelson Riddle orchestras followed which led to the 1996 release of “All In A Dreams Work” on Schoolkids Records, an debut which featured a first rate collection of nine originals and a cover of the Miles Davis composition” Four.” Reported by more than 250 Jazz stations, she reached the top 20 in the Gavin.
Her 2002 release of “Mood Swings” on Chiaroscuro Records continued to bring her recognition and success at the national level. On her 2006 release of “Vintage,” on Mahogany Jazz, she rediscovered little known songbook gems which she placed alongside a few widely known, yet unexpected tunes from outside the jazz tradition, which brought her glowing reviews from journalists.  Her 2012 release “To the Ladies of Cool”, is a contemporary exploration of the West Coast School of Cool that celebrates the artistry of Anita O’Day, June Christy, Chris Connor and Julie London.
Kosins has recorded with many jazz and rhythm and blues artists, including Aaron Goldberg, Reuben Rogers, Eric Harland, Peter Bernstein, Larry Koonse, Tamir Hendelman, Robert Hurst, Jeremy Pelt, Jon Ellis, Howard Levy, Don Was, Michael Henderson and Paul Keller.
“One of the brightest stars in the Kansas City Jazz firmament,” says Dr. Chuck Berg of JazzTimes Magazine, Joe Cartwright has performed on and produced numerous jazz recordings. His credits include work with internationally recognized jazz artists Eddie Harris, Sheila Jordan, Bill Watrous, Conte Condoli, Jeff Clayton, Rob McConnell, Carl Fontana, Red Holloway, John Clayton, Karrin Allyson, Tiger Okoshi, Claude ”Fiddler“ Williams, Richie Cole, Jimmy Witherspoon, Kevin Mahogany and Mel Torme.
