Dalton Shearer Went 1-2 Alec Dunn, Nate Moran Both 2-2 at Class B State Wrestling

Three Auburn High School Bulldog wrestlers each picked up at least one win Thursday and Friday, Feb. 14 and 15, at the Class B State Wrestling Tournament at CenturyLink Center Omaha.
Nate Moran, 220 pounds and Alec Dunn, 195 pounds, each went 2-2. Dalton Shearer, 132 pounds, went 1-2. Moran ended the season 30-5; Dunn finished the year 18-6 and Shearer ended the season 29-8.
Coach Oliver’s Comments
Coach Mark Oliver said the 2012-2013 wrestling campaign came to a close for the Bulldogs on Friday night at the Century Link Center in Omaha. Two Auburn wrestlers — Alec Dunn and Nate Moran — wrestled their final matches before a crowd of over 10,000 fans. Both wrestlers brought their best efforts, but fell short in their bids to win a medal at the state meet.
Oliver commented, “Alec and Nate had great tournaments. Alec fought back from a first round loss and won two straight matches to put himself in position to win a medal. He gave it his all in his last match against an Omaha Skutt wrestler, but he just could not get over the top. I wish Alec could redo his senior season and be able to wrestle without his shoulder injury, knee injury and influenza. He did a great job just getting back on the mat.
“Nate Moran’s first trip to state opened with a pin. In the championship quarterfinals, Nate lost a heartbreaker to the district champion from Lexington. Nate took the eventual state runner-up to overtime before falling by two points. Nate won his next match over a Nebraska City wrestler by pin to put himself in the heartbreak round. Nate faced a familiar face in this match. We had wrestled Hennessey from Waverly twice before and lost both times. This time the match went the distance, but we still were on the wrong side of a 3-0 decision. Nate wrestled great for his first time at state and his future looks very bright.
“Dalton Shearer had a good showing at the state meet. Dalton lost a close decision to the district champion from Schuyler and then came back and won a hard fought 2-0 decision over Pfingston from Fairbury.  This set up a match with Deloa from Omaha Skutt.  Dalton wrestled a great match, but lost on a very controversial call with only 7 seconds left on the clock. This egregious call took away a chance for Dalton to wrestle for a medal on Friday night. Dalton had a great season and will be back for more next year.  While we did not bring home any hardware, we are proud of how our wrestlers competed and look forward to next year,” he concluded.
