Six Johnson-Brock Students Qualify for National History Day; Public Performance Friday, April 29

Exploration, Encounter, Exchange is the theme for the 2016 National History Day Competition. Six students from Johnson-Brock High School have qualified for the national event at College Park, Md. in June. There will be a public performance of all state winners on Friday, April 29, starting at 6:30 p.m. at the school’s new library/media center. Desserts will be served following the performances. A freewill donation will be accepted to help defray the expenses of travel to nationals.

Auburn BPW Approves Studying Well Replacements

Thursday night, April 14, the Auburn Board of Public Works (BPW) allowed Utility Services to start developing a long-range plan to replace a well east of the city near the airport. Board Chair Chuck Knipe favored getting information to help the board in moving forward. Dr. Michael Zaruba said communities with a water source will be far ahead of ones who are not. He also did not favor drilling a well next to another one, referring to it as a band aid approach. Mac Erisman favored waiting to see what happens with the upcoming election. Rich Wilson questioned the benefits of a study.

Four Eagle Student-Athletes Earn Medals at April 19 Irish Invitational; Tanner Ebeler and Kacie Hahn Place First at MUDECAS

On Tuesday, April 19, the Johnson-Brock Eagle track and field teams traveled to Syracuse participating in the Robert A. Roh Irish Invitational. Falls City Sacred Heart was the host school. On Saturday, April 23, the Eagle student-athletes took part in the B Division of the MUDECAS meet at Johnson County Central High School, Tecumseh. Coach Sandy Behrends’ Comments on Irish Invitational “This is always one of the largest and most competitive meets we participate in each year and the quality of teams is consistently outstanding.

Brewer Named Head Women’s Basketball Coach for Peru State

Peru State athletic director Steve Schneider announced recently that Chuck Brewer would be joining the Peru State athletic department staff as the permanent women’s basketball coach for the Bobcats. Brewer had served this past season as the interim coach for the ‘Cats. Schneider said, “Coach Brewer has a proven record of successful recruitment and leadership experience. In a coaching career, one aspires to get to a national tournament. Coach Brewer previously led his prior team, the College of St. Mary (CSM) Flames, to the nationals his last four years there.”

ROSALENE M. ‘ROSIE’ MUELLER

1929-2016

Rosalene M. “Rosie” Mueller, 86, of Tecumseh died at Prairie Meadows in Omaha on Monday, April 18, 2016. She was born August 6, 1929 at rural Sterling and graduated from Sterling High School in 1947. She worked at Campbell Soup Company in Tecumseh for several years. She married Vernie Mueller on November 12, 1955 at St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling and they lived and farmed outside of Tecumseh. She was a nurse aid at Belle Terrace in Tecumseh for over 20 years. She was a very active member of St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling and had been a member of Sterling Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed all animals, visiting with friends and traveling. Survivors include two daughters, DeAnn Mueller and fiancé Joseph Harvey of Crescent, Iowa and Denise Kenney and husband Patrick of Hurst, Texas; three grandchildren, Dr. Zachary Lambertsen, Jenna Kenney and Blair Kenney; one brother-in-law, Roy Mueller and wife Dorothy of Lincoln; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Altman and Mabel Kriefels Berg; her husband Vernie, who died June 29, 1995; two brothers, Ervin Berg and wife Marjorie and Dellen Berg. Funeral services were Saturday, April 23, 2016 at St. John Lutheran Church of Sterling with Pastor Steve Chellew officiating. Burial followed in the Sterling Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington DC 20090 with Shannon and Erma Hazen in charge. A family prayer service will be held at the church on Saturday. A guestbook for signatures and messages of condolence is available online at www.foxfuneralhome.net. Zink-Fox Funeral Home of Sterling in charge of arrangements.

Helen A. Tuxhorn

Helen A. Tuxhorn, age 94 of Auburn, passed away Monday, April 25, 2016 at the Good Samaritan Society-Auburn. Survivors include her children and spouses Joyce and Larry Matiyow of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Jack and Janet Tuxhorn of Willis, Texas; Jerry and Ramona Tuxhorn of Auburn; Rick and Holly Tuxhorn of Auburn; grandchildren Ben Matiyow, Jason Matiyow, Brent Tuxhorn, Matt Tuxhorn, Nicole Dunn; 11 great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Funeral mass will be celebrated Friday, April 29, 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Auburn. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery near Auburn. Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday noon to 8:00 p.m., with family greeting friends 5:00 to 7:00. Vigil with Rosary, also at the funeral home, will follow at 7:00 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Auburn Rescue Squad or Holy Cross Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Hemmingsen Funeral Home of Auburn.
