The Nemaha County Commissioners on Wednesday, Jan. 14, accepted the resignation of County Assessor Jana Smith, effective immediately. Smith resigned because of health reasons. She was elected assessor in 2010, succeeding Lila Gottula, who had served in the position for 32 years. Smith was sworn in for her second term Thursday, Jan. 8. She had joined the assessor’s office as clerk in January 1987 and became deputy assessor in September 1990.
