State Patrol Troopers Conduct Vehicle Checks Along Highway 136 Last Week

Nebraska State Patrol troopers conducted vehicle checks Wednesday afternoon, June 30 and Saturday afternoon, July 3, along Highway 136. The check was at the Half-Breed Tract historical marker east of Auburn.

No numbers of vehicles inspected were available, said Deb Collins, public informational coordinator, State Patrol.
State Fire Marshal’s officials also checked to prevent transportation of illegal fireworks into Nebraska, in advance of the Independence Day holiday. Representatives of the Nemaha County Sheriff’s office and Auburn Police Department also participated.
There was one citation for possession of illegal fireworks issued June 30. Four fireworks citations were issued July 3. Fireworks citations were issued by Fire Marshal’s officials.
Troopers inspected vehicles for such items as driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations, proof of insurance, high and low beam headlights, turn signals, brakes, horn and windshield wipers.
Special enforcement efforts focused on enforcing safe driving practices with an emphasis on crash causing behaviors such as speeding, following too closely, impaired and distracted driving.
Collins said that June 30 there was one citation issued each for: violation of motorcycle helmet law, driving under suspension (DUS), registration violation and fictitious plates violation. There were 16 vehicle violation cards issued. Two warnings were issued for seat belt violations, which is a secondary offense.

July 3, Collins said that there was one citation issued each for DUS, child restraint violation and improper turn. There were 21 violation cards issued, she said.
Friday-Sunday, July 2-4, 2010, extra troopers were on the road, thanks in part to a $24,000 grant from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety. Troopers were assisted by State Patrol communications specialists who also put in overtime hours during the Independence Day holiday enforcement period.
