Auburn Middle School’s eighth grade math team was selected as the winner of the Best New School award at the annual Nebraska MATHCOUNTS competition. The contest served as a culminating event for Mindy Walker’s Algebra 8 students who worked throughout the school year to learn upper level math skills.

As the competition date neared, eight students were selected to represent AMS at the Nebraska’s 27th Annual MATHCOUNTS competition in Lincoln.
The competition consisted of several written components that test the ability of individuals and teams to solve complex, multi-step problems with, and without, the aid of a calculator. The Auburn group participated in the team competition against more than 100 other students from approximately 20 Nebraska schools.

Nebraska MATHCOUNTS organization also announced that the local 8th grade team achieved Silver Status Level in the MATHCOUNTS Club Program this year. The MATHCOUNTS Club Program is a middle school enrichment program designed to inspire excellence, confidence and curiosity in U.S. middle school students. In order to achieve the Silver Status Level, a group of at least 12 students must compete in five monthly challenges. The monthly challenges contain complex math problems covering a range of topics commonly found in the middle school math curriculum.

MATHCOUNTS is a national middle school program that promotes mathematic achievement through a series of fun and engaging “bee” style contests for 8th, 7th, and advanced 6th graders. The organization’s mission is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States.
