Lady Eagles Win Pioneer Conference Opener; Play Sterling in Second Round; Eagles Lose to Diller-Odell

The Johnson-Brock basketball teams split their Monday, Jan. 28, games at the Pioneer Conference basketball tournament at Lewiston.
The Lady Eagles defeated Lewiston, 39-29. It was their second win over Lewiston this month. Johnson-Brock raised its record to 7-14 while Lewiston dropped to 2-15.
The Lady Eagles played Sterling late Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 29, at Southern. Sterling, second seed in the girls’ tournament, was 15-4 entering the game.
The Eagles lost 50-55 to Diller-Odell. The Eagles fell to 7-13 while Diller-Odell took a 7-8 record to the second round of the tournament.
Tori Rowe led the Lady Eagles with 8 points against Lewiston. Nicole Carbajal, Sydney LaVigne and Sarah Wenzl each scored 6 points; Brooklyn Westenburg scored 5 points; Erin Bohling scored 4 points; and Jessica Bohling and Makayla Damme each scored 2 points.
Erin Bohling led Johnson-Brock with 9 rebounds while Carbajal had 8 rebounds. Other rebounders were: Rowe and Wenzl, 5 each; LaVigne and Westenburg, 3 each; and Jessica Bohling and Shawna Newman, 1 each.
Rowe led the Lady Eagles with 3 assists. Carbajal had 2 assists; while Erin Bohling, LaVigne, Wenzl and Westenburg each had 1 assist.
Rowe had 5 steals to lead Johnson-Brock. Wenzl had 3 steals; while Carbajal, Damme, LaVigne and Westenburg each had 1 steal.
Carbajal had 4 blocks while Wenzl had 2 blocks.
Johnson-Brock shot 15-of-40 from the field, all from two-point range; and made 9-of-13 free throws. Lewiston shot 10-of-41 from two-point range; missed all three of their three-point attempts; and made 9-of-14 free throws. The Lady Eagles outrebounded Lewiston, 35 to 29 and had 17 turnovers to 15 for Lewiston.
The Johnson-Brock vs. Sterling winner will play the winner of fourth-seed Southern, 12-5 and fifth seed Diller-Odell, 9-5, Thursday, Jan. 31, at 3:30 p.m. at Humboldt/Table Rock-Steinauer (HTRS) High School.
Other Jan. 29 tournament girls’ games were: third seed Friend, 13-2 vs. sixth seed Lourdes Central Catholic, 11-7; and second seed Falls City Sacred Heart, 16-3 vs. seventh seed Pawnee City, 10-8. Pawnee City defeated HTRS 44-23 in the other Jan. 28 girls’ game. HTRS fell to 1-15.
Friday, Feb. 1, the girls’ consolation is at 6:15 p.m. and the girls’ championship is at 8 p.m., also at HTRS.
The Eagles will play a consolation game Saturday, Feb. 2. Game times are 9:30 and 11 a.m., and 12:30 and 2 p.m., at Lewiston and Southern. The matchups are to be announced.
HTRS edged Friend, 51-49, in the other Jan. 28 boys’ tournament game. HTRS was 2-14 entering the second round while Friend fell to 5-10.
Diller-Odell played top-seed Falls City Sacred Heart, 15-3 and HTRS played second seed Sterling, 13-5, Jan. 29. Other second round boys’ games were: third seed Pawnee City, 15-3 vs. sixth seed Lourdes Central Catholic, 9-8; and fourth seed Southern, 11-6 vs. fifth seed Lewiston, 9-7. Semifinals are Jan. 31 and finals are Feb. 2, all at HTRS.
