Lady Bulldogs Conclude Home Schedule with Loss to Southern and Win Over Sidney, Iowa

The Auburn Lady Bulldogs basketball team lost 34-38 to Southern Thursday, Jan. 24. Saturday, Jan. 26, the Bulldog girls won 49-31 Sidney, Iowa. Both games were played at home. The Lady Bulldogs took a 6-12 record  Tuesday, Jan. 29, to 10-9 Lincoln Lutheran.

“The girls played really well in this game and gave themselves several chances to win the game. I was very pleased with the girls’ effort and thought that we played good team defense. Tierra Williams had a great game, recording her first double-double of the season,” Lady Bulldogs Coach Shawn Wehenkel said.
Williams scored 17 points and had 14 rebounds. Taylor Petersen scored 12 points and Hannah Brown 5 points to round out the Auburn scoring.
Other Lady Bulldog rebounders were: Petersen, 4; Brown, 3; Melissa Davison, Amber Mann and Maggy Rieschick, 2 each and Jayla Powell, 1.
Brown and Williams each had 3 assists to lead Auburn. Petersen had 2 assists while Mann had 1 assist. Williams led the Lady Bulldogs with 4 steals; while Brown and Petersen each had 2 steals. Davison, Mann and Williams each had 1 block.
The Lady Bulldogs shot 9-of-31 from two-point range; made 1-of-11 three-point attempts; and were 13-of-22 from the free throw line. The Lady Bulldogs had 28 rebounds and 23 turnovers.
Southern will take a 12-5 record to this week’s Pioneer Conference tournament.

“The girls played well for three quarters in this game. We lost a little focus in the fourth quarter, but we played well enough to get the win,” Wehenkel said.
“Taylor Petersen had a double double with 13 points and 11 boards. The team looks to keep the momentum going as we head into the final two weeks of the season before subdistricts begin,” the coach said.
Williams was the other Lady Bulldog who scored in double figures, with 10 points. Also scoring for Auburn were: Brown, 9; Rieschick, 5; Mann and Slama, 4 each; and Powell and Shimmel, 2 apiece.
Other rebounders for Auburn were: Mann, Powell and Williams, 3 each; and Brown, Rieschick and Chelsea Shelton, 2.
Davison and Petersen had 4 assists apiece to lead the Lady Bulldogs. Mann had 2 assists; while Shelton and Williams each had 1 assist.
Petersen led Auburn with 6 steals. Williams had 2 steals; while Brown, Davison, Powell and Slama each had 1 steal. Petersen had 1 block.
The Lady Bulldogs shot 14-of-36 from two-point range; 4-of-10 from three-point range and made 9 of 23 free throws. Auburn had 26 rebounds and 13 turnovers. Sidney fell to 3-9 on the season.

The Week Ahead
The Auburn girls go on the road for their final regular season games. On Friday, Feb. 1, the Lady Bulldogs play at 10-9 Falls City. Auburn lost twice to Falls City in December: first 29-35 at home and later 22-30 in the Peru State College Preholiday Tournament.
Tuesday, Feb. 5, the Lady Bulldogs travel to 9-8 Syracuse. Auburn lost 29-62 to Syracuse in the Auburn Holiday Tournament in late December.
