Bulldog Girls Clip Conestoga; Lose to Clarinda and Fairbury

The Auburn Bulldogs girls’ basketball team won one of three games last week. Auburn lost 24-40 at Clarinda, Iowa, Tuesday, Jan. 8; fell at home  28-49 to Fairbury Friday, Jan. 11 and won, 46-44, at Conestoga, Saturday, Jan. 12. The Bulldogs take a 5-9 record to a Friday, Jan. 18, game at Johnson County Central.

Taylor Petersen led the Bulldogs with 8 points. Hannah Brown and Maggy Rieschick each scored 6 points; and Hannah Shimmel and Emily Slama each scored 2 points.
Petersen also led Auburn with 9 rebounds. Rieschick had 6 rebounds; Slama had 3 rebounds; Melissa Davison and Amber Mann, 2 rebounds each and Jayla Powell, 1 rebound.
In assists, Petersen led with 3; Rieschick had 2 assists; while Brown, Davison and Chelsea Shelton each had 1 assist. Petersen had 3 steals; Slama had 2 steals; while Brown and Shimmel each had 1 steal. Brown, Mann, Petersen, Rieschick and Slama each had 1 block.
Auburn shot 5-of-21 from two-point range; made 4-of-14 from three-point range; and 2-of-10 from the free throw line. The Bulldogs had 24 turnovers.
“It was a tough night shooting the ball for the Lady Bulldogs. We committed too many turnovers and gave up too many easy shots to win the game,” Coach Shawn Wehenkel said.

Brown led Auburn with 14 points. Rieschick scored 6 points; while Petersen and Slama each scored 4 points.
Petersen and Slama each had 5 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Mann and Rieschick each had 4 rebounds; while Davison, Powell and Shelton each had 1 rebound.
Petersen and Shimmel each had 2 assists. Brown and Slama each had 1 assist.
Slama led Auburn with 3 steals. Petersen had 2 steals; while Brown, Mann, Rieschick and Shimmel each had 1 steal. Petersen had 1 block.
Auburn shot 6-of-25 from two-point range; shot 4-of-9 from three-point range; and made 4-of-9 free throws. Auburn had 25 turnovers.
“The team got off to a really bad start in this game. We had a very tough time handling their pressure. The team played much better in the second half and Hannah Brown caught fire in the fourth quarter, scoring all 14 of her points in the period. I was pleased how the team battled back in the fourth quarter,” Wehenkel said.

Tierra Williams led Auburn with 14 points while Petersen scored 10. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were: Brown, 8 points; Rieschick, 7 points; Slama, 3 points; and Mann and Shimmel, 2 points each.
Petersen and Williams each had 8 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs. Slama had 7 rebounds; Brown, 3 rebounds; Davison and Mann, 2 rebounds each; and Shelton and Shimmel, 1 rebound each.
Petersen led Auburn with 3 assists. Mann, Slama and Williams each had 2 assists; and Brown and Rieschick each had 1 assist.
Williams led Auburn in steals with 5. Slama had 3 steals; Petersen, 2 steals; and Brown and Shimmel, 1 steal each.
The Bulldogs shot 10-of-31 from two-point range; made 2-of-11 from three-point range; and made 20-of-43 free throws. Auburn had 25 turnovers.
“A great bounce back win for the Lady Bulldogs. The girls really battled in this win. We got into early foul trouble and our bench was called on early. We survived the first half and played a pretty good second half to secure the win. An overall team effort in this game,” Wehenkel said.

The Week Ahead
Johnson County Central was 5-8 as of Tuesday, Jan. 15, winning one of three last week in the MUDECAS tournament in Beatrice.
Tuesday, Jan. 22, the Bulldogs travel to Johnson-Brock. The Lady Eagles are 4-11 as of Jan. 15, also losing two of three games at MUDECAS.
Thursday, Jan. 24, is the Bulldogs’ next home game with Southern. Southern is 10-3, placing third in the MUDECAS tournament A Division.
