More Than 900 Flags Fly at Auburn Legion Memorial Park for Avenue of Flags Display

Members of the Sons of the American Legion are in charge of the Nemaha County Avenue of Flags, said Rick Janssen, committee member.
Wednesday, July 4, Independence Day, there were 909 flags installed around Auburn Legion Memorial Park, Janssen said.

Eleven of the flags are war flags, designating wars in which America was involved. The remainder of the flags honor veterans and are contributed by families, he said.
“I think it’s an impressive sight. It’s truly a countywide effort and everyone helps. The cooperation of different groups is unbelievable,” Janssen said.
Members of American Legion Post 23, Auburn, asked the Sons of the American Legion to be in charge of the Avenue of Flags. Other committee members are Dale Thomas, Steve Oakley and Jim Biere, all Sons of the American Legion members.
Anyone with any questions, suggestions or wanting to contribute towards the upkeep of the flags, please contact any committee member.
Recently, 59 more receptacles were installed to hold flags. Volunteers were running out of room to place the flags, Janssen said.
“When we get all of them up, we will have 16 extra receptacles,” he said.
The Nemaha County Avenue of Flags are displayed each year on Memorial Day, Independence Day and Veterans’ Day. The flags are put up in the early morning and taken down in the late afternoon. The flags are not installed in case of inclement weather, Janssen said.
Randy Bennett, Auburn Volunteer Fire Department chief, is supportive of the effort, Janssen said.
“The firefighters come and help put up the flags and take them down, along with other volunteers. Without their support we wouldn’t be able to do it. It’s a lot of work,” he said.
Setting up the flags and taking the down each take about an hour, Janssen said.
“We should be proud of it. A lot of out of town people stop and want to find out what’s going on. It’s an impressive site. We want area residents to realize how much we appreciate all of the help,” he said.
