Events Planned June 16-17 for 48th Annual Johnson Father’s Day Chicken Barbecue Activity
Johnson residents will be hosts Saturday-Sunday, June 16-17, for the 48th annual Johnson Father’s Day Chicken Barbecue.
Food vendors are available both days. There will be sand volleyball and softball tournaments throughout the weekend. June 16 is a recreational team tournament while June 17 is a competitive tournament.
The third annual Chicken Run is June 16 at 8 a.m. There will be a five kilometer run/walk and one mile walk starting on the Johnson-Brock Public School grounds. The 2011 run attracted 125 runners and walkers who ranged in age from 5 to 74 years.
On the evening of June 16, Johnson and Johnson-Brock High School alumni return for their annual reunion. The Rumbles will perform for a 9 p.m.-1 a.m. Saturday street dance. The quartet has played annually in Johnson for about 15 years and the street dance has drawn as many as 2,000 persons. The Rumbles have been one of the most popular and most successful rock-and-roll dance bands in the Midwest since the mid-1960s. The group has entertained generations of loyal fans at more than 7,000 performances.
June 17 begins with a 10 a.m. community worship service at the Johnson-Brock High School new gymnasium. It will include a program presented by children from Johnson-Brock Community Bible School. Children participating are preschoolers through sixth graders from churches in the Johnson and Brock areas.
At 11 a.m. will be an electric vehicle race on Main Street. Students from Johnson-Brock and Raymond Central high schools designed and built the vehicles. Johnson-Brock is a longtime participant in Power Drive, a light electric vehicle competition for high school students.
The Sunday afternoon schedule includes a quilt show at the Johnson Community Library from 1-4 p.m., bounce houses for children from 12:30-4:30 p.m., and a 1 p.m. Huff-and-Puff garden tractor pull at the county shop on the north side of Johnson.
The 4:30 p.m. ping pong ball drop on Main Street precedes the 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. serving of the traditional Chicken Barbecue.
The Star Care Air Ambulance is scheduled to land at the school parking lot at about 5 p.m.
Children ages 4-12 may participate in the Little Tuggers Tractor Pull starting at 5:30 p.m.
At 6:30 p.m. the Southeast Nebraska Community Band will perform.
