Betty Lou Buchanan, age 89 of Nebraska City died September 22, 2015 at Duff’s Friendship Villa in Nebraska City. Betty was born June 3, 1926 in Peru, the daughter of Samuel and Mary M. (Hendrickson) Adams. Betty married Melvin “Mike” Buchanan February 14, 1946 in Topeka, Kansas. Two children were born to this union. Melvin died January 9, 1993. Her son, Kenneth also preceded her in death in 1962 as the result of a farm tractor accident. Betty was a member of the Bethel United Church of Christ in Nebraska City where she served on the church council and was a Sunday school teacher. She also served as president and secretary of the Women’s Fellowship. Betty was a Red Cross volunteer and helped others in doing volunteer work. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a Past President of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Betty loved gardening, canning, reading, camping and traveling. Survivors include her daughter, Karen Ohnmacht and her husband Stanley of Nebraska City; granddaughter, Sabrina Ohnmacht of Bellevue; sisters in law, Panzy Adams of Auburn, Phyllis Adams of Peru and Lou Adams of Idaho; many other relatives and friends. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son; brothers, Don, Robert, Virgil and Frank; and sisters, Opal and Audrey. Funeral services were Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Marshall Funeral Chapel in Nebraska City with Rev. Bill Switzer of the Bethel United Church of Christ officiating.
