Nemaha County Commissioners were updated Wednesday, Aug. 10, on Nemaha Advocates Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NADAA) activities. Mallory Siebold became coordinator in late June after Jessica Baker left.
Ordering materials to rebuild one aeration basin at the wastewater treatment plant was approved by the Auburn Board of Public Works (BPW) Thursday night, Aug. 8. Dave Hunter, general manager, said estimated costs are $13,000 and delivery of materials will be in six to eight weeks. Included in the 2016 budget is replacing the diffusers in one of the two aeration basins. Hunter noted the utility has tried to do so the past couple of years. He said the utility wants to rebuild one basin this year to get a good review of its operational life.
More Auburn Bulldog student-athletes will have their first competitions of the 2017-2018 school year Thursday and Friday, Aug. 25 and 26. The girls’ golf team opens the season Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. with Plattsmouth at the Auburn Country Club. The volleyball team plays an exhibition at 6:30 p.m. at Falls City Sacred Heart High School. The proceeds from the contest will go towards the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Foundation. 2016 is the first year of volleyball exhibitions benefitting the foundation. In previous years basketball games preceded the regular season.
Starting their season with one of the toughest schedules in many years, which included a tough opening tourney, the Peru State volleyball team came away with a 3-1 record in the Bethel Pilot Invitational in Mishawaka, Ind. The Bobcats won their first three matches before dropping their fourth match of the tournament against the 24th-ranked Indiana Wesleyan Wolves.
Betty Ann (Nauenburg) Fitzsimmons of Auburn, Nebraska would like to let you know that her last Bob Ross painting on earth is complete. Betty met her Lord and Savior at the age of 78 on August 20, 2016 after a brief diagnosis of lung cancer. Her next commission takes her to the place where she will be with her soulmate, mother, father, son and many other family and friends. The food is divine, the slot machines are loose and the music is playing for all to dance and sing. Betty was born October 25, 1937 to Lee and Florence (Roark) Nauenburg and raised on a farm outside of Fullerton, Neb. She was married on October 22, 1956 to her soulmate, Bill Fitzsimmons, of Cedar Rapids, Neb. Betty was a proud Navy wife for 20 years traveling the country with her husband and family until Bill’s retirement in 1971. Betty worked as a real estate agent while living in Auburn. Her precious dogs, Buddie, Mollie and Chester were the center of her later years in life. Betty was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Auburn. Those who passed before her were husband, Bill Fitzsimmons; parents, Lee and Florence Nauenburg; son, Timothy Fitzsimmons; mother and father-in-law, Bill and Pearl Fitzsimmons; husband, Leland Winfrey and son-in-law Wayne Grosserhode. She is survived by her daughter Vickie (Hoerl) and husband Wilbur of Overland Park, Kansas; daughter Valarie (Rathke) and husband Jim of Jonestown, Texas; grandchildren Pamela Snodgrass and husband Luis Soto of Denver, Colorado; Ashley Pressly of Chicago, Illinois; Nolan athke of Austin, Texas and Kelsey Grosserhode of Denver, Colo.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews as well as family friends Melvin Halkens and Sharron Randolph of Auburn. Mass was held on Wednesday, August 24th at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Auburn. Graveside services will take place at the Catholic cemetery in Cedar Rapids, Neb., at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 25th. A luncheon will follow both services. Memorials may be sent in Betty’s name to Hearts United For Animals in Auburn.
Dennis “Denny” Lowell Lockard, 81, of Stella, Nebraska was born November 11, 1934 in Shubert, Nebraska to Dewey and Iva (Curry) Lockard. Dennis grew up in Stella where he attended grade school. He graduated from Stella High School with the class of 1953. While in high school, Dennis was active in athletics competing in football, basketball, and track. On September 21, 1958, Dennis was united in marriage to Vivian “Darlene” McIntire. To this union four children, Dennise, Dennette, Dennis, and Darren were born. The couple raised their family in Stella where Denny worked various jobs before he took over “Lockard Service” in 1968. Denny operated the business for over 40 years before retiring. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and the St. Louis Cardinals. Denny was an avid “Huskers” fan that loved whatever sport was competing. Denny passed away on Saturday, August 20, 2016, at the St. Elizabeth’s Regional Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska having reached the age of 81 years, nine months, and nine days. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Darlene, and brothers: J.D., George (Dorthy), and Byford (Loretta) Lockard. Denny is survived by his loving children: Dennise (Lonnie) Reimer, Dennette Wheeler (Rick Gilbertson), Dennis (Derinda) Lockard, and Darren Lockard (Wendy Hemmer); eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister-in-law Nellie Lee Lockard of Stella; and many nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 27, 2016, at the Stella Community Church in Stella, Nebraska with Pastor Bill Stearns officiating. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, August 26, 2016, at The Wherry Mortuary in Humboldt, Nebraska. Family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. at the mortuary.
